Situated near the Istana Iskandariah, the Sultan of Perak’s official residence. The museum rests majestically on Bukit Chandan, a hilly landscape that is also known as Changkat Negara. Previously known as Istana Kenangan, Istana Tepas, and Istana Lembah.
It is an amazing architecture because it was built without any architectural plans and without using any single of nail. This building rests on 60 wooden pillars and is 42 meters long and 11 meters wide. The shape is represented a sword in its scabbard when viewed from above. The walls are made of woven sliced bamboo, patterned in diamond motifs called the ‘kelarai’ (straw mat woven art) while the roof structure is a combined styles of the 5 ridges (perabung lima) and the ridge of the 5 bananas (perabung pisang sesikat). The doors at the top of the museum stairs are also particularly unique since they are set horizontally than vertically. The structure is gaily painted in white, yellow, and black which represents the color of Perak state’s flag.
It was planned and built in 1926 (built around the same time as Istana Iskandariah). After the great floods in 1926, when the original palace, Istana Seri Sayong was almost swept away, a decision was made to build a new palace on a higher ground (Bukit Chandan). The palace was completed in 1931 and set up as temporary residence for Sultan Iskandar Shah (1918-1938, the 30th Sultan of Perak) while the original royal palace or Istana Negara was being torn down for the new Istana Iskandariah.
In 1982, His Royal Highness, the late Sultan Idris Shah (1963-1984) gave his assent to transfer this palace to the care of the Museum Department. Today, Istana Kenangan comes under the state museum authority, and houses the Perak Royal Museum.
